Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, there are numerous opportunities for giving to those who are need of food, toys, clothing, financial assistance and other things to get them through the Holiday Season. What happens then? *crickets chirping* It's been found that right after the holiday season, food banks have a dire need to re-stock their shelves, and our creative, generous, yarn shop owners dreamt up a plan to help.

Saturday, January 7, was our first ever Breakfast Sale. Yarn Cravin' opened two hours early to shoppers, and all those who brought a non-perishable breakfast food item to donate received a 35% discount on their purchase from 8:00-10:00AM that morning. We were blessed with generous shoppers who brought nutritious food items in the way of cereals, pancake mixes, pop tarts, cereal bars, muffin mixes,oatmeal, peanut butter, juices, and more.

After 10:00AM, any non-perishable food item could be redeemed for a 25% discount on purchases for the rest of the day. The food continued to stack up, and the knitters continued to pour in the door to shop.

Just across the street, in the church, the community room had been reserved. Knitters, spinners, and other crafters were welcome to spend the day working on their UFO's and socializing. Snacks were shared. Knitting support was offered. Some even brought their kids with them, and they proceeded to play and look after the little ones.

Some old friends came back to us just in time for the sale. Our old, worn out, comfy chairs came back, having had a face lift! Look how gorgeous they are now!

The chair pictured below, however, has a lovely slip cover which can be removed.

Stocking Stuffers and Stuff

If you're a regular reader of The Toledo Blade, you probably have noticed the Holiday Gift Guides published daily in the front section in December. The December 21 issue was a guide entitled, "What To Buy Artists and Crafters" and featured a mention of the many knitting and crochet books carried by Yarn Cravin'! Congrats on the good press, Bobbie and Dale! If you still have your Blade from that day, you can find it on page four.

It's December, Fiber Friends! December!!!!

Small Business Saturday in late November was a big success thanks to so many of you. Your support of Yarn Cravin', and other independent shops in the area that day, was greatly appreciated. Thank you!

If you need some ideas for quick gifts to knit, Yarn Cravin' has you covered. Stop by and check out the front table full of ideas and books full of quick knits. Even the little tree has ideas for you.

From ear-warming to headbands to crochet bracelets with some surprise bling in them, there's something for everyone. No time to knit or crochet? Not sure of the size? Your fiber friends would love a gift certificate to Yarn Cravin'!

While you're in the shop, be sure to fill out your Wish List card so that friends and family members can get you exactly what you want. Just ask anyone working for a Wish List card, write down yarns, books, needles, notions, bags and the sizes, colors and or amounts. The Yarn Cravin' Elves will keep it on file and take care of the rest. Oh! You do have to make sure to send them shopping at YC, though. :-)

Want some ideas for your Wish List? Here's what just came in this past week...

Dream In Color Classy. This is a worsted weight yarn, great for mittens, fingerless mitts, cowls, a scarf, hats, etc. Think warm, winter gear! This yarn is American spun and dyed, too.

Madelinetosh Merino Light has arrived! This fingering weight yarn is hand-dyed here in the USA and sells out everywhere. It's beautiful for socks, but two skeins make a gorgeous shawl. It won't last long.

If you missed out on the Everlasting Sock by Dream In Color, more has arrived. With as fast as the first shipment flew out of YC, we know this is tried and true.

Keep checking the Yarn Cravin' website for the updated schedule of classes, which should be posted soon. Of note, there will be two different classes about how to use Ravelry; one for beginners, and an Intermediate class for those who want to learn to post pictures and add links and use Ravelry more in-depth. If you use fiber, want to search patterns on the Internet, and want to network with other fiber enthusiasts in your area, these classes are for you.

BIG NEWS!!!! In February 2012, Yarn Cravin' will celebrate being FIVE YEARS young! What a fabulous milestone for a small, independent, business! If you were fortunate enough to be at Yarn Cravin' on November 12, then you know just how gorgeous the items from the HPKY Trunk Show were in person. There are photos below of a few items. Do you love Noro yarns? There's a brand new Noro book available, full of accessories like mitts, cowls, scarves, and hats. This fiber enthusiast can't wait to knit the entrelac mittens!

*Yarn Cravin' IS open the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving.

*The Saturday after Thanksgiving is Small Business Saturday - a day to support small, independent businesses. Support Main Street, not Wall Street!

Before the feast for your eyes, though, a reminder about the HPKY (Hand Painted Knitting Yarns) Trunk Show on November 12. This show will be cash and carry. The link will take you to the website where you can see some of the yummy colorways that HPKY has available. If you have been in Yarn Cravin' recently, you may have seen the scarf in a scarf kits that came and went. These kits contain a hand-dyed silk scarf and yarn dyed to match, along with instructions for knitting and and many ways for tying and wearing the combination! The scarves and yarns are dyed together so they really do match exactly. This is a show you won't want to miss!

Have you seen the chunky yarn from Claudia Handpaints? This knits up quickly into mittens or fingerless mitts or even a quick pair of socks.

Meet Toboggan, by Classic Elite. This is also a chunky yarn, that will knit up quickly into hats and mittens. There's a pattern booklet available specifically geared to this yarn!

Retreat Reminder and New! New! New!

Today is the last day of summer and that means the Yarn Cravin' Fall Retreat is right around the corner. As of today, 32 people have signed up for the fabulous fun that awaits October 15-16. There are still EIGHT spots left, and we want to make sure you don't miss out on any of the fun and fellowship of this amazing event. Stop in the shop to pay your deposit and reserve your spot. If you've never attended one of our knitting retreats, get a friend and sign up! Your life will never be the same. I have it on good authority that there's a Mystery Knit Along (KAL) in the works!

September 12 was the Trunk Show for Abstract Fibers and it was great fun! Yarn Cravin' was full of wonderful people and beautiful yarns and fibers.

If you weren't able to make it to the trunk show, never fear. Abstract Fibers will be staying at Yarn Cravin', and if there's something you want that is out of stock, we can easily order it for you!

Author Event/Book Signing! There are flyers in the shop announcing this event as well. October 1, at 1:30, at St. Luke's Hospital, Mary Lou Carney, the author of The Truly Terribly Horrible Sweater That Grandma Made Me will be speak and be available to sign books purchased there. We have this book in the shop if you'd like to see it, or purchase it for a loved one. This book is co-authored with Debbie Macomber. Tickets are $10

Packed House and Reminder!

Insanknitty knit nights are becoming more crowded inside Yarn Cravin', especially since temperatures outside have dropped considerably in the past week or so!

It seems nobody wanted to stay out on the porch last week! It was thoughtful of those who already had babies to sit in the sock room, wasn't it? ;-)

Dale Ann showed off a hat from Nordic Knits, the Book of The Month. It's very Ohio State-ish. Feel free to choose other colors! heehee

DON'T FORGET!!!

Monday, September 12 is our first Monday being back open after returning to "regular" hours. Come and celebrate with us at our Abstract Fiber Trunk Show! A rep from Abstract Fiber will be on hand to introduce these gorgeous yarns and fibers for spinning. Items will be available for purchase in the shop, and any colors sold out will be able to be ordered. Click on the link for a preview of what's available. There are going to be some really gorgeous socks walking around Northwest Ohio this winter! It won't end at socks, though. Yarns from lace weight up through worsted are available, at all different price points. It's always exciting to get something new at Yarn Cravin'! The fun starts at 2:00PM, and the shop will stay open until 8:00PM that day for the show.

It's Still Summer

The calendar may say "back-to-school" but in all reality, it is still summer. There's plenty of time to knit that light-weight sweater or airy shawl you have been dreaming of, if you so desire.

If your mind is already turning toward cooler temps and fall/winter projects, never fear! Some great big boxes of Brown Sheep recently arrived at Yarn Cravin', just full of wool, and gorgeous new colors in addition to your old favorites.

The bus trip to the Michigan Fiber Fest was a "go" and this past Saturday morning, the backyard at Yarn Cravin' became a parking lot for all those lucky enough to get on board that bus!

Someone will have to update us on the trip, and let us know all about their purchases.

On September 12, Yarn Cravin' will go back to regular hours and be open again on Mondays. To celebrate, we will be having a TRUNK SHOW from 2:00PM to 8:00PM highlighting Abstract Fibers. Below are just some of the colorways that will carried in the shop, and will be available for purchase on Sept. 12. If there's something that is not available, it can be ordered. Yarns are available from lace weight on up through worsted, and there's more than one kind of sock yarn, including a cashmere blend! Yummmmm.

Mad, I Say!

The sock madness continues for just a few more days, and some of the team members have taken this challenge very, very seriously!

July 23 was Sock Madness Day at Yarn Cravin' and many knitters took the time to show off their completed socks, and spend the day in the cool comfort of the shop knitting away toward their goals.

Bus Trips and Sock Madness and Handpaints... Oh MY!

Wow! There are NINE teams of knitters signed up for Sock Madness at Yarn Cravin' right now. That means there are going to be some very happy, warm feet this fall and winter! How are you doing so far on completing those unfinished pairs of socks? Remember to call or stop by the shop and get a star by your name each time you complete a *pair* of socks.

Personally, I know I would be doing better if a couple of yarn shop owners would stop ordering yarns like all of the gorgeous Claudia Hand Painted sock yarn pictured below! It's flying out of the shop, by the way. Some colorways are already gone.

Those beautiful yarn bowls are for sale, too, by the way. If you like those, you'll love these little guys:

Yes, they are salt and pepper shakers! Please save me from buying them! These gorgeous sheep are handmade right here in town.

Now, on to some serious fiber business. Bus Trip. Yes, bus trip!

Saturday, August 20, is the Michigan Fiber Festival in Allegan, MI. Our very own Bad Amy is organizing a bus trip (no driving = knitting time!!) for anyone who wants to go. The details can be found here:Michigan Fiber Fest Bus Trip. The cost is $40 per person, and this will be for a charter bus. You can bring food/drinks, and there is plenty of cargo storage underneath for any purchases you may make during the day. There must be 35 people signed up and paid in advance by AUGUST 1st to make this trip happen. As of today, the trip is 1/3 full. If you are a knitter, crocheter, spinner, weaver or fiber enthusiast of any sort, this is a trip you don't want to miss. The vendor list is huge! Are You Up For The CHALLENGE?

July is bringing a new challenge, Fiber Friends, and it's calling your name. The best part is, you don't have to do it alone!

Sock Madness is coming to Yarn Cravin'. If you knit socks, and are like many others, we are guessing that you have some unfinished pairs sitting around waiting to be completed. Our wonderful shop owners, along with a couple of conspiring Julie's, decided we needed a sock challenge during July, to inspire us all to finish those pairs of socks before fall and winter creep up on us.

Here's how it will work: Let the shop know you want to participate. If you have a group of four who want to play, give them all four names. If you are on your own, you will added to a team to complete a group of four. Nobody will be on their own. This is a fun challenge, and there will be prizes. Yes, it will be competetive, but the idea is to finish socks! Why socks? Well, who wants to have a sweater or afghan sitting on their lap during July?!

Socks must be adult sized and no footies are allowed. They must be full-sized socks. You can be completing a pair already in progress, or cast on more if you have none in progress. (hahaha) Socks must be fingering or DK weight.

Sign up! The more the merrier! You have nothing to lose. Your feet will love you for it!

We Knit In Public. How 'Bout You?

On June 4, Yarn Cravin' held its' annual Knit In Public (KIP) Day. The day was hot, but beautiful. Vendors sold their wares. Contests and prizes were so much fun! Apologies in advance for not getting photos of everyone present; I know I missed the porch knitters.

SPINNERS!!! Mark your calendars for JULY 2! Rebecca (of sock blankie madness) has reserved the meeting room at the Heatherdowns library from 10am-5pm for spinning to kick off Tour de Fleece. This is open to all spinners- not just the crazy Tour de Fleece spinners :-)

Please post to the thread on the Insanknitty board on Ravelry to let her know if you can make it so she can make sure we have enough chairs for everyone.

Do You Hate Cancer? Make a Donation, Be Entered in a Raffle!

I'm Karen, your Insanknitty blog writer. I'm posting this with Dale Ann's permission.

My older sister is currently winning her battle with breast cancer, having been cancer-free for 3.5 years. I'm guessing you know someone who has fought breast cancer, or know of someone. It's a horrible disease, and affects ONE IN EIGHT WOMEN. If you look around our Tuesday night Insanknitty, that's staggering!

On May 14, 2011, my sister is participating in Race For The Cure in Columbus, Ohio. The money raised will stay in Central Ohio to fund mammograms and cancer treatment for those without insurance and those who are facing fincancial hardship. I bet you know someone in that situation also.

On my own personal blog, Ttownknitiot, you will find my sister's story, and a link to her donation page. You will also find a contest with YARNY PRIZES!!! Yes, I said prizes. wooohooo! There are FOUR prizes, not three, since our own Sarah Lou has generously offered to make a set of stitch markers.

It Really Is Spring

Easter has come and gone, and thoughtful Joann Arndt brought in this beautiful bread (the eggs are dyed before baking, but not cooked ahead of time!) to share with those at the shop. Isn't it beautiful? First we thought it might be too pretty to eat, but we got over that idea in a hurry!

There are so many important tidbits of information to share with you, dear readers, so read carefully and pay attention!

Have you ever struggled to turn the spinning racks that held the needles and notions at Yarn Cravin'? There's no longer a need to fret! The spinners are gone, and the walls have been converted to "peg wall" where everything hangs neatly within reach, and with room for several customers. Check it out!

SALE YARN (also known as bathroom yarn tee hee hee) is currently 40% off. Bobbie and Dale were even nice enough to move it out of the bathroom! They're so good to us!

The Spring/Summer Class Schedule is ready to go. You can find it on the Yarn Cravin' website normally, but it's not ready online yet. Paper copies are in the shop.

World Wide Knit In Public (KIP) Day will be celebrated on June 4 starting at 10:00AM at Yarn Cravin'. This is a week earlier than normal, due The National Needle Arts Assoc. trade show that our dear owners will be attending. We do have some wonderful local vendors that will be set up for you to shop from that day. Bring your fold up camp chairs, a sack lunch if you don't want to buy from downtown, some sort of beverage, and of course, bring your knitting, spinning, weaving, crocheting and happy smiling faces! Did I mention there will be prizes? Bring your sunscreen!

The Front Porch is OPEN! Use it if you dare! Seriously, the warmer days are coming. I promise. The porch is ready and waiting for all of us.

I scouted out a couple of new cotton yarns that might be nice for summer projects for you all. Listen, cotton yarns have come a long, long way. They are much easier on one's hands than the old dishcloth cotton we used to suffer though. Give them a try! This first one is by Cascade, and it's "Luna." Aren't those colors gorgeous?

The second cotton yarn comes from the Queensland Collection, and is called Puna Fresca.

Coming up quickly, SOCK CLUB! Meeting quarterly now, instead of monthly, you Sock Clubbers might need a reminder that the next meeting is Monday, May 9 at 6:00PM. The yarn for May is gorgeous! If you're on Ravelry, go get a sneak peek. If you're not, I'll get permission to snag the photo and post it here later.

See this very adorable baby sweater? It's the Baby Surprise Jacket (BSJ) and it was made by Dale. It's not difficult, and we discussed today the possibility of having a KnitALong (KAL) for this sweater in the fall. Would you be interested in participating?

And there's one last tiny thing to tell you all, dear fiber friends. If you read this blog, and shop at Yarn Cravin', good things come to you! Yes, taste. This Friday, April 15th, from 6:00PM to 8:00PM, Yarn Cravin' is hosting a Classic Elite Yarn Tasting. NOTE: Call to reserve a spot, and the cost is $10. Healthy snacks will be served. Never been to one? A yarn tasting is a great opportunity to sample new yarns before you buy them! Bring several different needle sizes with you, and you will get sample skeins of yarns to knit with, and keep. You can decide if you like the way the yarn feels knitted up before you even make a purchase! Licking the yarn is optional. ;-) Buttons, buttons, everywhere! Many of you already know that Yarn Cravin' has a fantastic selection of buttons, but guess what? More just arrived! Big buttons, little buttons, funky buttons, conservative buttons. Bobbie does a fantastic job ordering for the shop, and for all of you! Stop and see what's new. The Classic Elite Knit Along (KAL) is in full swing, and someone from Yarn Cravin' is going to win a basket full of goodies from Classic Elite later this spring. At least 2 skeins of Classic Elite yarn must be used, and pattern from one of Classic Elite's Spring 2011 booklets has to be knit. There are so many to choose from! Good luck to all those who are participating. If you're a fiber fair enthusiast, you are probably familiar with stitch markers and jewelry from Waters' Edge. We're lucky enough to now carry these stitch markers in our shop! The pewter and crystal charms hang from a kilt pin that can be worn to close a shawl or adorn a jacket, as well as keep track of the repeats in your knitting. The book for this month's Book Club is Knitting Green by Ann Budd. Remember that Book Club meets the last Thursday of the month. Books are already waiting for you at Yarn Cravin'! Eco-friendly yarns are in stock, as well. Just a reminder that with the economy the way it is, it's more important than ever to give support to the small, independent businesses that you enjoy. The crocuses are blooming, and daffodils and tulips are poking up out of the ground. Spring really is here, fiber friends! You won't believe all the gorgeous new yarns at Yarn Cravin' right now, but I'll try to fill you in.

First up, from Classic Elite, is Classic Silk. This yarn is a silk/wool blend and it's delicious! Look at all the beautiful colors.

Looking for something colorful? Check out Sausalito! It's also superwash, so think baby items, cowls, etc!

From Katia, this yarn is a wide tape, with openings along the edge for inserting the needles. Rizos makes a gorgeous, frilly scarf!

Need something for that spring/summer baby that's coming? This yarn by Sirdar might be the answer! Summer Stripes is a DK weight yarn.

Also by Sirdar, Smiley Stripes uses bold, happy colors.

By now, Old Man Winter has many of you ready to cry, "uncle!" I'm sure. The frigid temps and sight of snow day after day has you longing for warmth, am I right?

There are lots of new, wooly, yarns to try out at Yarn Cravin'! I popped in on Saturday to take pictures of some things for you.

Sock knitters can brighten up the day with Opal Surprise. These colors will bring cheer to even the grayest of our winter days!

An old favorite, Paca Twist, is back in stock, and moving out fast.

There are some new colors of Encore...

Looking for bulky yarns? We got 'em! Viking Balder is also superwash.

Covington, by Cascade, is another new-to-us bulky yarn.

Similar to Encore, and also made by Plymouth, is a new line called "Coffee Beans." These colors are very suitable for "manly" projects, and also for projects for the home... afghans, pillows, etc.

As previously promised, the yarn from Pagewood Farms is back in stock. There's even a chunky yarn with faux fur mixed in! Think fun cowl or hat, fiber friends.

What good sports you all were, braving the frigid early morning temps to come out and shop in your pajamas!

We weren't sure if Barb came to shop or just to entertain us that morning, but we're sure glad she made it, regardless!

More than one pair of these sheep jammies were spotted. (These legs belong to Nancy!) I seriously covet these PJ's.

I know we had someone come from as far away as Flat Rock, MI, and one from Fostoria. Did anyone travel farther for the sale?

Once the sale was ended, Dale and Bobbie took all of the Yarn Cravin' Elves to breakfast. We are never in one place at the same time, since we help out and/or teach at different times. Would the shop even hold us all?

We enjoyed some fantastic food, and even better company. Dale had kind words to say about everyone. And look! Here's the whole fam damily!

Makin' A List and Checkin' It Twice...

Did Santa not bring you exactly what you wished for this Christmas?

Never fear! The Elves at Yarn Cravin' will help you find the fibery goodness to make you happy! Right now we're doing inventory, so if you buy it, we don't have to count it, dear friends. For real. It's a win-win situation.

Here are a few new things that might bring a smile to your face, and help you use up any gift certificates you may have received.

First, we received only 4 hanks of this Giant Purls from Pagewood Farms yarn, but more will be coming in! It is gorgeous, and you will love it. Dale's purple cowl is on display in the shop.

Brand new from Italy is "Dare"! This knits up on size 17 needles, and one hank makes a looooooong scarf.

Do you want to knit gloves, but hate how sock needles get in the way while working on the fingers? Addi has come out with short needles specifically geared to glove knitters! These needles are only 4" long and come in several sizes from US 0 to US 4.

How about something fun? Do you wear Crocs? What about sending these to a friend?

Make Your Holiday Wish List!

Fiber Friends! As always, there are wonderful, beautiful things arriving almost daily at Yarn Cravin' that you really must see!

First, though, I have to tell you about making your Holiday Wish List. Take the time very soon to stop in the shop and fill out a Wish List card at the desk. You can write down any item(s) that you are longing for, be it special yarns, needle sets, books, a special knitting bag... whatever your heart desires! After you have done that, the Yarn Cravin' Elves will keep your card on file. Your job is to send your friends, family, loved ones, and anyone else who says, "I have no idea what to get you for Christmas/Hannukah/Solstice!" to the shop. Voila! The Yarn Cravin' Elves can pull out your Wish List and help that person buy you the perfect gift. It's a win/win situation. If you're in a bind, I'm sure someone will help you complete your Wish List by phone.

Now, on to photos of some new goodies in the shop!

First up, a fabulous new book. If you only grab one book this winter, I would recommend this one. Every project in this book is made with Cascade 220, but you can substitute any worsted weight yarn. Hats, mittens, scarves... useful, practical items! This book is flying out of the shop.

Misti Alpaca in new colors! Knit up that Ruffles and Ribs Scarf for someone special in a gorgeous new color.

Vintage CHUNKY has arrived! This is the same Vintage you love to knit with, in a chunky weight. Think *quick projects*! There are many gorgeous colors to choose from as well.

And look at this beautiful Liberty Wool, Fiber Friends! It is self-striping and comes in many gorgeous colorways. The scarf pattern behind it can be found in a booklet sold in the shop. There are colorways that are suitable for men, also. This is a worsted weight yarn.

If you're looking (or wishing!) for a new knitting bag, there are some beautiful bags in the shop. We have restocked the Lantern Moon Totes that were so popular earlier this year.

Everyone says the Fall Retreat was a HUGE success. Thank you to Annette for her planning!! Mark the weekend of April 2-3, 2011 on your calendar. That's the date for the Spring Retreat.

Surely you have noticed that the days are colder, especially the mornings. Now is the perfect time to stop in at the shop and stock up on supplies for keeping your feet warm this fall and winter! Hand knit socks are wonderful and last a looooooong time. They make great gifts, too, especially in superwash wool if you aren't sure if the recipient will hand wash them.

Yarn Cravin' has so many new sock yarns, you have to see them to believe them, but my trusty Nikon and I have photographed some to give you a small taste of what's in store...

And I have to tell you about the new tote bags that have arrived. They are made from recycled 2-Litre soda bottles. The designs on them are famous quilt patterns. The bags are big, and zip at the top. They hold a huge amount of knitting! Really, they will hold an afghan or sweater project easily. I think they would make great re-usable shopping bags for when you come to shop to knit and pick up more knitting supplies. They are priced just under $7 and are a great deal! Shown below are two of the designs.

Mitred Square Mania

Do you find yourself swapping little bundles of sock yarn with other people? Do you see squares where others see socks? Are you taking your knitting to bed with you at night? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be suffering from "Mitred Square Mania" which starts with this,

A very large group of dedicated (obsessed??) knitters are doing this KAL at the shop which is meeting the third Wednesday of each month. Shawls, scarves, and blankets are all being knit.

Co-Owner Bobbie has sewn up some fantastic project bags which are currently for sale in the shop. They are all different, and come in different shapes in sizes. These are a great way to keep your sock projects all separated, and a fabulous way to keep your knitting bag organized. Just grab the correct project bag, or two, and you're ready! I always keep one little project in the car, as my "waiting around" knitting. Oh, and sorry. The pink and and orange tie dye bag is gone.

Bags by Bobbie

The big football Border Battle will soon be upon us. If you have to ask what that means, stop reading now! Otherwise, I must ask, where do your loyalties lie? Make no bones about it with this yarn!

Flock Sock is soft, and yummy. It will create spirals of color. Think candy cane stripes. The blue/gold and red/grey colorways are going fast, but there's red/cream and green/cream for the holidays, or for local sports teams. This is a true fingering weight yarn.

Last but not least, the Fall Retreat is coming! Choose your projects, pack your bag, get your pillow and sleeping bag ready! If you didn't make the list, don't despair. A couple of spots have opened up and Dale and Bobbie have been calling people on the waiting list. Remember to take some cash and/or your checkbook. There will be some great yarn deals available. And thank Annette, our fearless Retreat organizer who does such a great job!

The temps this week don't indicate that it's fall, but the cool weather will show up soon, really. Stop in and stock up on some wool for your winter projects. There are new yarns arriving every day. Literally!

REMINDER! SUMMER FAIR IS COMING!

In case you somehow missed this information that has been on the Yarn Cravin' website, and has gone out via email, here it is again... Info about the Summer Fair knitting contest! You might still be able to get something entered!

We will be following a summer fair theme with August 19, 20 and 21st being our fair dates. The 21st will be the BIG day! Mark your calendars now to hold those dates. On those days, customers will be able to vote for their favorite in each category. We will award 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes in each category plus each participant will receive a special discount coupon. Items will remain at the shop the following week for all to see the winners. So, it’s time to show off your creativity and talent!

Now, let us explain the categories and the rules.

Categories:

1) Flat Feet Frenzy: Make anything BUT socks with Flat Feet. If you are not familiar with flat feet, it is yarn that is knitted, then hand dyed and ready to unravel and knit with. You may use one or as many flat feet as you like for your project.

2) Classy Crochet: Make anything but a dishcloth in crochet. We have many talented crocheters and thought that we needed to highlight their talents!

3) Fair Isle Fun: Have fun making anything with fair isle knitting.

4) Animals: What’s a fair without some animals? Knit or crochet any kind of an animal or family of animals.

5) Two or More: In this category the items must be made holding two or more different yarns together. (EASY PEASY!)

6) Mirasol Collection: If you are not familiar with these yarns, they are beautiful and we carry the full line. Purchasing these yarns helps to support the Mirasol Project which was set up in 2006 to improve the future of disadvantaged children in Peru. This collection was named after Mirasol, a little girl who helps tend a herd of 3000 alpaca at the Mallkina ranch high in the sierras of the Peruvian Andes. So we are challenging you to make something with these yarns. We have many Mirasol books, but feel free to use any pattern you wish.

7) Happy Holidays: Anything seasonal goes! You pick the holiday!

8) Keep us Warm: This category is for Afghans! We had beautiful entries last year!

9) Mohair Madness: Make it with only mohair or add in mohair. We have different weights and colors as well as some with sparkle!

10) Scrap Happy: Time to use up some odds and ends in your stash. You must purchase one yarn that will then be used with bits and pieces from your stash. Think scrappy, a little of this and a little of that with a new yarn to pull it all together. (GOSH, I CAN'T THINK OF ANYONE KNITTING WITH SCRAPS RIGHT NOW! HAHAHAHAHAHA!)

Rules:

1) All yarns must be purchased at Yarn Cravin’ on or after March 20th. A 10% discount will be given on these yarns but you must tell us it is for the contest at the time of purchase. This is on top of your customer appreciation discount. (Sale yarns excluded, in stock yarns only)

2) All entries must be submitted by August 14th to Yarn Cravin’ along with an entry form.

3) All items will be on display from August 19th-28th. Voting will be held on the 19th-21st. Each customer will be allowed to vote for one item in each category.

4) Gift Certificates will be awarded for the top 3 in each category. 1st prize/$25, 2nd/$15 and 3rd/$10. All participants will receive a special coupon to use in September.

So, mark your calendars. August 19th-21st will be our Summer Fair Days. Each day we will have some fun surprises. Saturday, the 21st you will want to be here for sure!

You'll Want to See This!

Over the weekend, I popped into Yarn Cravin' to see what was new and I was glad that my trusty Nikon make the trip with me. You'll appreciate it too, I'm sure. I'll try to keep the verbage low, because there are many photos to show you all!

First up, Lotion Bars!!! These tins have a round, solid lotion bar inside. The solid lotion is great for knitters and other crafters because it is not greasy, and absorbs quickly, allowing you to get back to your fiber crafts quickly. These are also very portable and come in several yummy scents. Come and sniff!

Look at the adorable teddy bear and kitty cat tape measures! You've seen the sheep, and the round peppermint candy look-alike. Here are more critters to steal your hearts. Right behind them you'll see care labels for your knitted items made by SOAK. Attach a label to a knitted gift that tells the recipient just how to wash that special knitted item.

Just one hank of Berroco Jasper yarn made these three felted coasters! Buy two hanks and make a great house-warming gift, or send some off to college with your big kid. For that matter, make some for your own house! This is a quick and easy project. We can felt them at the shop if your washer at home won't do the trick. Just try to let us know ahead of time.

If you are a fan of Claudia Handpainted Yarns, check this out:

New colors have just arrived! Aren't they gorgeous? This is being sold as sock yarn, Fiber Friends, but I know you can think outside of the box and will figure out many other ways to use this beautiful yarn.

Are you looking for an eco-friendly yarn? Berroco Re-Mix just arrived (the photo below just shows a few colors!) and is made entirely of recycled fibers!!! It's a mix of several fibers - nylon cotton, linen, silk, but NO wool ... I'm probably forgetting something. I was amazed at how soft it felt, and each ball has 216 yards! This is a great yarn for those allergic to wool, or possibly for baby items.

Who is looking for something fun to knit for the holidays? Why not knit up a drawstring bag for someone special to carry during the winter? Or fill it with goodies and use it for your winter decorations. I find the little "coal" bag particularly amusing!

This item and the next really excited me. Many of you already have a needle gauge from Debra's Garden. Lo and behold, she's made one for sock and lace needles! This needle gauge goes down to size 000! If you know someone who has a love for knitting with teeny needles, this would make a great gift or stocking stuffer! There are several colors and they come in a matching drawstring pouch.

What really got me excited was this nifty gadget and I know a woman designed it. Look at this stitch counter! The inner circle goes up to stitches 1-9. The outer circle starts at 10... so stitch 11 would be 10 + 1. But wait, there's more!! If you look closely, at the very outer edge, at the bottom, you'll see a notch. At that spot, there's a blade, and that can be used to cut your yarn! Ingenious! These items are each individually hand made, so the price is a bit steep, but the quality on each one is high, and I think they will last for years. Send your significant others in to buy one for you! ;-)

You cannot have been in the shop recently and missed seeing all these little bundles of yarn being made or being passed around. Friday there was a whole basket full. See?

Bobbie and DaleAnn were sitting in the back making more of them as fast as they could and it's all because of this:

The shop is hosting a KAL (knit-a-long) for the 10-stitch blanket and if you haven't caught the mitred square madness, you probably will! In an ideal world, one would use sock yarn scraps. Being that not everyone is a sock knitter (what? some people don't knit socks?!), the lovely ladies at Yarn Cravin' are accommodating those knitters by making up bundles of "scraps" that are really new, for purchase. You can knit a blanket, a shawl, whatever your heart desires. The first official night for the KAL is August 18.

So, now that all of that is out of the way, please remember that your Summer Fair Projects are due at the yarn shop for "judging" before August 19. Your projects will be on display August 19-21 and voting is August 21. There will prizes in all categories!

The Fall/Winter class schedule will be out soon also. Keep your eyes open for that. If you saw something in these photos that caught your eye, hurry into the shop, or call and have someone hold it for you. Here today, gone tomorrow, you know. The early bird gets the worm.

WWKIP Day and TNNA and New Goodies and... Whew!

SUMMERTIME!

In Mid-June Bobbie and DaleAnn went to TNNA in Columbus. You know, the big semi-annual trade show where they learn all about what the latest trends are in the fiber world. The boxes started arriving at the shop before the two of them even arrived home! Really, knitters, you have to stop into the shop regularly to believe all of the new yarns, patterns, gadgets, and notions that are already streaming in for Fall and Winter. And did I mention BAGS? Oh, the bags! All shapes and sizes, and in fabrics and colors that you won't believe! Don't worry, I've taken some photos.

World Wide Knit in Public Day was celebrated June 19 and it was a glorious, warm, sunny, breezy day. The porch was comfortable and Dale put fans outside to make it even better. Some people stayed away because of the heat, but a good time was had by all who attended. There were prizes!

SarahLou finished the Dead Fish hat for her dad for Father's Day! :-)

A serious note was part of the day, since 10% of all sales went to help the families who were affected by the tornadoes in early June. A bag for extra donations was put out that week as well. Special thanks go out to all who donated whatever they could to help the families who are in need. We are fortunate to be surrounded by such a generous, caring, fiber community!

And now to those bags I mentioned earlier. This is by no means all of them, dear knitters. I did make the photos bigger for you, though. ;-)

These clamshells by Lantern Moon are a set of three! They are great for notions, coins, lipsticks, your charms for your bracelets... use your imagination! Oh, but the red one may have come home with me today. Ooops! I think there's one more at the shop, though.

JaJaJa Purses makes these pretty bags using reclaimed upholstery and draperies. There are no two exactly the same, and they come in many shapes and sizes. It's been hard for me to leave this red bag at the shop!

Red Lantern Moon... and there are matching clutches, too. Yummmm!

Not a bag, but DaleAnn has finished her Sideways Linen Vest. I had to try it on, and it is gorgeous!!! I know many of you are working on vests of your own, and I would love to take photos when you finish them. How is your progress?

As always, Tuesday nights are busy nights with our group of fiber lovers growing. We have welcomed many new faces to Yarn Cravin' and love that you are telling your friends about us. The more, the merrier!

Were you at the Spring Insanknitty Retreat? It was great fun! Many new people joined in this time, and new friends were made! The date for the Fall Retreat has already been set - Oct. 16-17, and reservations are being taken. Don't miss out! Here's a link to some photos: Spring 2010 Retreat Photos

There are many new yarns in the shop right now, including JoJo Land Rhythm and Melody! The new Bearfoot Mountain Colors sock yarn - Crazy Foot - has arrived, too. This is dyed on a new base yarn, and is leaving the shop quickly.

Just a reminder:

We are also starting a new Knit-a-long! The pattern we have chosen is the Soft Linen Sideways Lace Vest (Ravelry Link) from Classic Elite designed by Julia Trice. It is a beautiful vest that can be worn year round. If you have never joined us for a knit-a-long before, let me tell you a little more about how it works. We will start Thursday April 29th. You need to come in to sign up and purchase supplies on or before April 29th... but I bet Bobbie and Dale will let you in if you beg. Then every Thursday during the Knit-a-long, Dale Ann and Bobbie will be available to answer questions and give help if needed. You are welcome to come and knit for as long as you can join us on those days. It is not mandatory that you come every week but we would love to see your progress and we know it’s more fun to knit with friends. The shop is open until 8:00 PM on Thursdays.

Extra Bonus: One lucky person will win a gift basket valued at $200 from Classic Elite Yarns. The details for the basket will be explained on the 29th. You must pre-register for the knit-a-long to qualify for the gift basket.

Have you seen the cotton ankle socks Dale Ann knit recently? She used one skein of Katia Bombay, and the socks are so yummy! This yarn is flying out of the shop, too. If you want your socks to match, you'll need two skeins. Of course, if you're like me, and fraternal twin socks are okay, one skein is plenty for shortie socks. Think summer, knitters!

This summer's knitting contest theme is a County Fair theme, with many different categories. The details are on flyers in the shop. I will try to get them listed here ASAP.

P.S. If the sideways vest isn't your style, a whole bunch of other knitters are informally knitting the February Lady Sweater together. This is a gorgeous sweater, based on a baby sweater designed by Elizabeth Zimmermann. There aren't any formal meetings, but you can get help/support on Tuesday nights at Knit Night.

Catching Up

Wow! This winter has been a bear, hasn't it?! February 2010 was the second snowiest on record; topped only by Feb. 1900.

It's finally March, and this month seems to have come in like a Lamb, with temps reaching 40 degrees and the SUN shining! The Winter Olympics have ended, and if you participated in Ravelympics over on Ravelry, hopefully you completed your events.

If you haven't stopped by the shop, lately, Tuesday night Insanknitty sessions have been jam-packed to just about standing room only. Don't let that keep you away, though. There's always room for one more. Or two. Or three. :-) Dale Ann and Bobbie just celebrated their THIRD ANNIVERSARY at Yarn Cravin' also! Hooray for all of us! There is a new rule, though:

We just need you all to be aware of the writing on the wall!

Also, remember that classes continue to be in full swing at Yarn Cravin' on just about every day of the week, and at all different time slots. The Winter schedule is winding down, so watch for a spring schedule soon.

Would you like to see the very newest in organizational tools from Namaste? Of course you do! They just arrived at the shop today...

This little box is an accordion file for your circular needles! Inside you'll find over a dozen (I didn't stop to count them, but I'm thinking closer to 24) pockets, plus tabs for labels. The colors match all of your gorgeous knitting bags. There are countless ways to use this handly little box - maybe get one for longer lengths of circulars, and one for shorter lengths? It would make a great gift for a friend who knits exclusively on circulars. Having seen the price today (it's less than $25!!) I know they will fly out the door.

Many knitters are counting down the days until the Spring Retreat in mid-April. If you signed up, but haven't paid yet, get your $$$ in ASAP. All spots are filled, so if for some reason you cannot attend, be sure to let Dale Ann, Bobbie or Annette know right away. Others are anxious to attend.

Puppies, Ponchos and Fish

Puppies, ponchos and fish. Say what?!

You'll see!

Item number one: The Puppy.
Look at Misti! Isn't she adorable? She's growing quickly, so if you haven't stopped in to see her in her "little" stage, do it soon!

Item number two: Ponchos. Look at the adorable poncho Deb made! She took the Icelandic Sweater class with Wayne (former co-owner of Fiber Works, which we all dearly miss), and adapted what she learned to make a poncho for her granddaughter. Brilliant!!

Last, but not least, FISH! Fish hats! This is a free pattern at knitty.com and you can knit it yourself quite easily. Fishy hat can be made from Mission Falls superwash quite economically like the hat on the right. Just picture yourself at a Toledo Walleye hockey game sporting one of these hats! Too much fun, friends.

Visitors and Giving Back

If you're a regular at Tuesday night Insanknitty, you may have noticed an unfamiliar face recently. Bobbie was teaching someone to knit. What you wouldn't have known is that the good sport, Bridget, was also doing research for an article she was writing for The Toledo Blade, which ran this past Wednesday. You can read the article HERE if you missed it. Ms. Tharp did her homework, visiting the three local independent yarn shops for her story. It was great to have more positive press for Yarn Cravin', for sure!

We had the chance to check out some new yarns, like this gorgeous yarn from Mirasol.

These new Flat Feet arrived for October. Look at those desert southwest colors and motifs!

The Knit to Lose Group which met on Saturday mornings was such a great success that they have started another session. The last session ended with some very successful weight loss and a donation of over 75 pounds of food to the local food bank. Just "shopping" in our own pantries reminded us how fortunate we are! The food bank was so surprised to get the call to come and pick up food from our little group. Great job, girls.

Make sure you get outside to enjoy the fall colors, everyone. They will be gone in the blink of an eye.

How many days until Christmas, DaleAnn? Bobbie? I bet those ladies know how many days we have until the holidays are upon us! But no pressure. There's always a Yarn Cravin' Gift Certificate!

Were you watching TV at 12:30 PM today, Sunday, October 11? Our wonderful yarn shop owners were featured on "Coffee With The Fords"! Cynthia Ford found Yarn Cravin' during Harrison Rally Days and invited DaleAnn and Bobbie to be on the show. How exciting is that? I took photos of my television screen to show you all here!

Look! Here's our Jen! from Arizona, showing off Mary's completed baby blanket at the Fall Retreat. Hooray!

Julie joined Bobbie and Dale and they all showed off beautiful knitting!

The closed-captioning is referring to the running joke about tornadoes and how we all keep knitting instead of heading to the basement. hehehee Don't the ladies look gorgeous on TV?

In the meantime, are you looking for a quick and easy shawl to knit to keep you cozy this fall? I came across this free pattern recently. Multnomah is made with fingering weight yarn (or go to thicker yarn for a bigger shawl!) and is garter stich with a feather and fan edging. Yarn Cravin' Has Gone To The Dogs

The current temps and humidity outside may say hot, hot, hot, but the leaves on the trees say otherwise. This photo was taken from the porch at Yarn Cravin' just last night at knitting. Yes, Fall is here. Your favorite football fan is going to need some warm mittens or a hat or scarf! Have you been in to see all the goodies?

Our resident Princess Pooch, Addi Purl, now has a playmate. DaleAnn has adopted a gremlin... er... Shi Tzu, and named her Misti (as in Misti Alpaca hehehehe). Remember I posted a while back that Yarn Cravin' is family friendly and kid friendly. I really meant it. It's a fun, playful, happy place.

The porch is overflowing with sale yarns that are just too good to pass up. Really. You won't forgive yourself if you miss out on these. And your friends won't forgive you if you don't bring them along! (We won't tell on you if you shop before bringing a friend to shop, though.) It's not all cottony, summer yarn. There are some wools and sock yarns, too. I promise!

Inside the shop, the shelves are packed to capacity with new yarns. I mean really new. Yarns you've never seen before have arrived and are filling every nook and cranny. New patterns are flying in and out as fast as they come in. Browse for sure, but ask "What's new?" when you come in the door!

Tuesday nights are still knitting nights at the shop. We would love to see you, even if it's just for a few minutes. Bring whatever you're working on. We've had spinning, crocheting and cross-stitching along with our knitters. It's all about community and looking out for each other. Come and show off what you've made. I would love to feature your project here.

Summertime, Summertime...

Even though the calendar says it is back-to-school time for most of us, there's plenty of summer left. Have you been to the beach? Maumee Bay State Park is just a short drive away, and some Yarn Cravin' regulars spent a Sunday there knitting and relaxing not too long ago.There is still time to go enjoy the sun and sand like Mary, Alana, April and Becky did! (Karen was there, too, but she took the photos.)What about summertime treats? Have you enjoyed some of those? These treats don't have calories, but they sure look yummy! I can reassure you that it is definitely nice and cool inside Yarn Cravin', though.

This is the perfect time of year to sit outside on the porch with friends and knit a bit. Have you made time to do that? The night I took this photo, Yarn Cravin's porch, (and their inside, too!) was full to overflowing. Poor Gina was sitting on the steps.

The Fall schedule of classes has just been sent out. (Fall? It's 90 degrees today!) New yarns are pouring into the shop. Bobbie and DaleAnn can probably tell you off the top of their heads how many days until Christmas, and you better get knitting!

Have you ever looked at the Flat Feet sock flats and wondered how they knit up? Here's one example of a pair, knitted in ribbing, from one of the Patriotic color schemes. DaleAnn did this pair, and you see there's plenty left over. There's no ball of yarn to tangle or chase around, so this is a good option for travel. Check them out!

Hot Off The Press!

Get them while you can, friends. The super-deluxe, "I Love Yarn Cravin'" shirts are here! These shirts are sized up to 3x and come in several colors. They are unisex sized and will fit us all. (No puny girly cut t-shirts, knitters, but we can probably arrange for some of those if there's a need/desire.) Even better, they are made right here in Toledo, so we are supporting another local small business.

The July/August Sock Club Yarn has arrived and it's a deliciously soft cotton yarn in sky blue. You have to see it and touch it to believe how soft it really is. It's waiting for you!

Cherry Tree Hill semi-solid sock yarns have arrived, and no two colors are the same. These are going fast, knitters. It's been a long time since I have seen such deeply saturated colors that are so gorgeous. Buying two would make beautiful stranded colorwork... I'm thinking the gorgeous Endpaper Mitts by Eunny Jang.

Spinners! There's some gorgeous new roving in the shop also. If you're itching to spin and want something new without having to go online to order it, Yarn Cravin' is your place to find it.

Sock Club, Monthly Contest, WWKIP Day... Oh My!

There sure a great deal going on at Yarn Cravin'! I can hardly keep up with it all. What I can tell you is that there will be great new yarns coming in the fall thanks to DaleAnn attending The National Needle Arts (TNNA) Convention in Columbus recently and ordering nearly everything. Really.

The Sock Club is moving along and participants are knitting gorgeous socks! Take a look:

This last photo is our newest sock club yarn. Remember, hand-dyed yarns can have great variation in them. See the difference in color intensity between the sock on the right and the sock on the left? Check out your skein before you buy.

If you haven't seen what the Monthly Contest is producing, you really do have to check it out. These are the entries for June; anything felted. Wow!

This past Saturday was World Wide Knit in Public Day. I couldn't attend to take photos, but rest assured, our regulars were camped out on the porch and in the yard, knitting and having fun together! Knitters all over the planet participate in WWKIP Day.

Come by and knit in the shade of the porch sometime soon. Bring whatever you're working on. There's nearly always a breeze, and there's certainly always someone to knit with.

Just The Usual Clownin' Around

The porch was open and jam-packed Tuesday night. All of the chairs were out and the air was warm and pleasant. Like always, there was some clowning around going on. Was it more than usual? YOU be the judge!

I think I may have a new career with Ringling Bros. if my current job falls through.

But seriously, there was much knitting, crocheting and spinning going on Tuesday, amidst the socializing. Mary helped me with the photography, and we decided to focus on hands and works in progress, rather than the people. Well, except for Cher, who had a finished shawl to show off. So sit back and enjoy all the photos of all the beautiful hands making beautiful things.

Wait, wait, wait! That's definitely NOT knitting. It might count as fiber. Who is that?! ;-) (Don't worry, Barb, I'm not telling.)

Springtime Buzz

Have you heard about the latest contest the shop is having? The Spring Into Summer Contest has started with Socks in May. Right now the socks are on display for voting! Items for June must be completed and turned in 5 days before the start of June, and can be anything felted. Click on the link above to go to the the complete rules.

I have seen first-hand the gorgeous knitting you all can produce. C'mon, knitters! Get those kneedles moving and get into the contest!

Sock Club continues to meet with two groups meeting on alternate months. The May/June yarn comes from Perfect Day Yarns. The color is Turks Cap Lily. Sarah dyed yarn for us last year, too. Be sure to drop in and pick up your yarn. Feel free to get started on the pattern ahead of time! (The colors are way prettier than this photo show!!)

Retreat Review

It has been said in the past, "What happens at the retreat, stays at the retreat." That just wouldn't be fair to everyone though, because there was just so much good knitting and hilarity going on. So, with some editing, I will share with you the Insankitty Spring Retreat of 2009.

The girls had their special knitting gear on and were ready to go. But, do you all know who forgot to bring knitting to the retreat?

Outside knitting was great. We special-ordered the 80 degree weather.

We had birthdays to celebrate!

The spinning demo was fun and interesting. Thanks Dawn, for sharing your knowledge.

Are You Ready for the Weekend??

Tuesday night was jam packed at Yarn Cravin' the past two weeks! Last week some people were even sitting on the floor it was so crowded. They were good sports about it, though, and we did help them up at the end of the evening. This week Julie won the door prize and look how excited she was: I think that yarn is Comfort DK. I tried to win by getting my ticket while passing through that room on my way back through to my seat, but no such luck. I was closer than usual, though.

Gina was working on finishing her sweater all evening and did finish, except for weaving in the ends and blocking. Here's a shot of her putting on the buttons, which match fabulously. Honestly, though, she bought the buttons long ago, and found yarn to match. "Reverse Engineering," she said.

Here's a shot of modeled sweater. Gina is headless, at her request! Great sweater, Gina.Now, about that Spring Retreat I may have mentioned once or twice. (hahaha) It's THIS weekend, April 25-26. Look what just came into Yarn Cravin' if you want to do some spinning at the Retreat:

Friday Plans?

There's a little party at YC tonight, April 17, and all the cool people are going to be there! We're having a book launch for the book Pints and Purls by Karida Collins and Libby Bruce. This book is full of fun projects to knit while being social, and maybe, just maybe, enjoying a drink or two.

You Spin Me Right Round

Not too long ago, on a Tuesday evening, if you walked into Yarn Cravin', you probably saw this going on. Spinners had taken over the library corner!

Becky was helping Alana and Annette with spinning using drop spindles. They were doing a great job learning how to make their own yarn, and caught on quickly. Check out Annette, in the photo below:

Drop spindles have been around for centuries. In the Middle Ages, children were given the job to spin yarn using drop spindles from a very early age. That sure didn't help the adults feel more competent the other night. Below is Alana winding off the single yarn so she can ply it together.

Becky also helped April with her new spinning wheel, andApril generously gave others the chance to use it. Here is Mary at the wheel, and Becky sorting out a problem.Alana made yarn! Way to go!

Seeing Green

It's not often that we reach 70 degrees in mid-March, but for St. Patrick's Day, we sure did! What luck! Tuesday Insanknitty was held outside on the porch. The sun was even shining for us.

Sarah and Becky had their green on, but Barb looks like she just saw a spider!

Addi Purl was wearing green, too.

Sarah showed off her green socks, made from the St. Patty's Day Flat Feet.

Bobbie made a fabulous green cake for us. Look, I saved you a bite. Yummmmm.... (If you get to Yarn Cravin' fast enough there might be a whole piece left for you. Seriously.)

So, where were all of you? We missed you! You wouldn't believe all the new goodies coming into the shop for spring and summer. Stop by and look, and touch. Amazing books are coming in too; everything from basic "how-to" books on up to detailed sock books. Stay in the loop, because some of these will fly out the door as fast they come in.

The Porch is Open... Well, sometimes.

Some of our knitter friends came in from Chicago and southern Ohio this past weekend, and the weather cooperated enough for us to actually knit outside. Yes, friends, the porch is open! The white stuff is gone, and the days are longer and warmer. Here's photographic proof that people were indeed outside, knitting on the porch.

Knitting Takes Balls, You Know

Yarn Cravin' has them!

First up, the much-sought-after Zauberballs have arrived in many colors... One of these balls will make a whole pair of socks, but I can see you all getting creative and making some mittens or scarves with these color combos. Come and get them!!

Dale Ann took this gorgeous photo! It's Ti-Dye sock yarn. (Hey, isn't this the stuff we bought for Ferol and Bobbie on our trip to Chicago?!) Gorgeous stuff, knitters. Look at those spring and summer colors!

The March/April Sock Club yarn has arrived. Yummmmmmm. "Springtime In Perrysburg," custom-dyed for us by Claudia, of Claudia Hand Painted Yarn fame, is stunning. You will need two hanks for one pair of socks this time around.

Participants in the Sock Club are still working on their January/February socks, using all sorts of different patterns. As promised, here's a sock in progress, but not the whole knitter!

We also drew names to see who the lucky winners would be for the St. Patty's Day Flat Feet this past Tuesday night. If you were a winner, leave a comment so everyone knows who got the luck-o-the-Irish!

REMINDER! The deadline to get in your money for the Spring Knitting Retreat is fast approaching. March 27. Or did I say March 28 last time? Regardless, it's coming up! Don't be left out. This is an overnight retreat, and you never know what kind of silliness you might miss out on.

There's one more new thing you need to know about at the shop. Square knitting needles. Square DPN's and circulars by Kollage Yarns. If you have wrist or hand pain, consider trying them. Be advised, though, you need to swatch! So far everyone I know, including myself, has had to go up one needle size using these.

There were some newcomers to Tuesday night Insanknitty last night. They were treated to a full house of knitters and earful of lively chatter! If you were in attendance, here's just a bit of what you might have overheard...

"Oh, yes, Yes, YESSSSSSS!"

"When it plays that movie and vibrates at the same time, then I'll be impressed."

"He goes to bed with me every night."

"Make sure you include words 'sporting goods' in if you're looking for the Dick's Sporting Goods website online!"

I was laughing so hard, I didn't even get to knit. However, I did manage to snap a few photos for you all. You know, all 4 of you who read this.

Gina wants to know:

Why yes, as a matter of fact, we do! And look what's new! Flat feet for St. Patrick's Day! These are limited in number, so if you think you might want one, get into the shop and put your name in the drawing. If your name is drawn, you get to buy one.

These are part of a "birthday of the month" series, and each month there will something new. Did I get that right, DaleAnn?

Sock club members are still working on January/February socks. It won't be long before the March/April yarn arrives.

Retreat News! The Spring Retreat is fast approaching. Reserve your spot by writing your check to Yarn Cravin' and turning it in. The cost is $80. All payments must be received by March 28!!! Tuesday night Insanknitty was more crowded than usual tonight and with good reason. Many of us were there to congratulate Bobbie and DaleAnn on Yarn Cravin's 2nd Anniversary.

A whole bunch more of us were there to see the final result of secret planning that started way back in November!

SarahLou hatched a brilliant plan and ran with it, after getting input from a few others. Tuesday nights since Thanksgiving have been spent covertly collecting funds to put together a spectactular gift for our favorite yarn purveyors. You light up our lives, DaleAnn and Bobbie! Thanks for making Yarn Cravin' such an awesome place for all of us to shop and hang out!

Hey everyone, spread the word! This week, on February 12th, Yarn Cravin' turns TWO! Can you believe it? How very exciting for DaleAnn and Bobbie, but also for all of us. Having such a wonderful place to shop and gather for fun and friendship is priceless!

All this week, February 9 - 14, there are special happenings at the shop. There's a special sale going on, but if you aren't on the email list, you won't know what the special deal is. HINT: It has to do with TWO... and getting one.

On Tuesday night, during Insanknitty, we'll have a little celebration. Of course, when we all get together, no celebration is little! I'm sure there will be goodies to munch on while we knit. My guess is the food will be more plentiful than usual.

Thursday, February 12th is the actual birthday of Yarn Cravin', and DaleAnn says there's going to be a little something for all shoppers that come by the shop that day.

Make sure you stop by sometime this week to congratulate our beloved yarn shop owners on making it TWO YEARS (in this economy!!) extend good wishes for the future.

Even when it's snowing like crazy, like it was yesterday evening, Yarn Cravin' had some die-hard knitters show up to spend time together. These long, cold nights are good for finishing off projects!

RETREAT NEWS ALERT!!!

If you haven't heard already, another Yarn Cravin' Knitting Retreat is being planned. This one will be held overnight, Saturday, April 25 and into the day Sunday, April 26. Lots of surprises are being planned, so be sure to contact the shop and make your reservation. Ask anyone who has attended a previous retreat and they will tell you, it's an event you don't want to miss. Be sure to get signed up soon!

Happy New Year, Knitters!
Long time no see!

We're having a whale of a winter, aren't we?

Even Commodore Perry is pointing the way to get the heck out!

Rest assured, though, at Yarn Cravin', everything is toasty warm, and the Insanknitty has continued pretty much without interruption.

Even on snowy Saturday afternoons, you will find some die-hard knitters gathered together to laugh and knit.

So what's new? More than I could tell you about here, that's for sure. One highlight, though: come in and get the yarn and pattern for this yummmmmmy Noro sweater. It's NOT the normal, scratchy stuff. This is brand new yarn! The vertical ribs in the pattern are amazingly slimming. Really! Come and see it for yourself.

If socks are your thing, why not consider joining the Sock of The Month Club? It runs every other month, and it's not too late to sign up for the group that will start in February. See the Yarn Cravin' site for class details or call the shop. That delicious yarn is the January/February yarn and it was dyed just for us.

Like always, Tuesday night is Insanknitty Night; open knit night. Come for the social time, friendship and laughter. There's always help or commiseration for your works in progress (WIP's).

Okay...so it's been while...understatement of the year...

We have been sooooooooooo busy getting older! Birthday upon birthday hit our group this spring....Cher, Joyce, Karen, Becky, Barb, Sarah, and Patti all got a year older recently! Good thing knitting keeps us all young and gorgeous!

Alana had a beautiful baby boy, celebrated by all here at the shop with a lovely baby shower! He's just adorable! So...the big news...

Yarn Haven is now Yarn Cravin'! Through a series of "interesting" events (~~and one crabby old crone in Tennessee with nothing else to do but cause trouble for others~~ name trademarks and such) Dale Ann and Bobbie were forced to change the name of the shop. After much back and forth over what the new name would be, one of the yarn reps popped in one day and suggested YARN CRAVIN'. We all fell in love with it, and the rest is history. The name officially changes June 1, 2008!

Is it really MARCH already??? February FLEW by...it was almost like there were only 29 days in it or something. So much has happened! The biggest news, in this writer's opinion, is the one year anniversary of Yarn Haven's opening!

Bobbie and Dale Ann, thank you, so much, for providing a warm, wonderful place for all of us fiber friends to grow in friendship and yarn stash! You are each so precious to us!

Interesting that when the shop opened, there was a blizzard. The one year anniversary was marked with lots of snow and slippery roads as well.

The weekend prior was the First Annual InsanKnitty Knitting Retreat! Keep your eyes peeled for retreat dates for NEXT year. Here's a small recap of some of the fun:

So, it's Tuesday night, Knit Night, and here we are...6:31 PM and it's Dale Ann, Mary, Kathy, Maria and myself staring out at the frozen tundra before us. Yes, the icy pellets of freezing rain are falling from the sky and causing rather slippery roads...and YES, it's probably dangerous to even consider driving in these conditions. HOWEVER....

WHERE ARE THE REST OF YOU????

Cher is one of the regulars at InsanKnitty! I asked her to share what she was knitting with the rest of the world, and here's what she sent...

"Attached is a collage of the 3 projects I'm working on right now. No, I'm not working on 2 ruffled scarves (only one). It just makes for a nicer collage.

My favorite needles are Addi Turbos with the Clover velvet straight wooden needles a close 2nd. You will rarely find me working on dpn's unless they're used to finish a project.

Misti Alpaca (especially the handpainted that just arrived @ Yarn Haven) is one of my favs when it comes to yarn, but it also depends upon what project(s) I'm working on.

I have been knitting for approximately 4 years. Before that I had a succesful mail order cross-stitch business. Let's just say with maturity comes the need for eye-easy projects. Cross stitch is not eye-easy! Need I say more?"

Only five days left! Are ya ready???

Thank you Dale Anne and Bobbie for the wonderful Christmas presents you bestowed upon each of us on Tuesday night! They are VERY appreciated!!! You two are the best!

Also, thank you to all those who contributed to our impromptu buffet of Christmas treats! WOW! What a wonderful mini feast we enjoyed! Cookies, candies, crackers, dips, brownies, PEPPERMINT COFFEE, flavored creamers, HOMEMADE angel food cake (incredible Jenifer)....we are so spoiled. Mmmm!

Isn't it cool that we have so many new fiber friends as a result of Yarn Haven?!?!?! Just think about the new people you've met since the shop opened. I, for one, am thrilled to have met so many of you. What a unique, beautiful, and sincerely insane group of women!

Okay, friends...let us enjoy Christmas and the New Year and then let us...RETREAT!!!

Also, let us not forget that there are several new classes starting in January, so don't wait too long if you intend to sign up. This includes SARAH'S SOCK CLUB...space is getting limited.

Well...okay...maybe quiet isn't the word, but there was definitely less noise than our usual Tuesday nights! Our group seemed to be half it's normal size and volume.

We so needed a blog! We get together every week and knit, laugh (sometimes more of a cackle), and celebrate yarn...but NEVER...EVER....look at the Visa bill!
